What’s Hiding in Your Closet?
Spring weather is finally upon us so pack up those winter clothes and get busy organizing your closets with the shorts and shirts you’ve been missing all winter. But where to start? If you’re like most of us, the closet is one area of your home that you wish you had more of. Unless you are able to borrow closet space from somewhere else, why not make the most of what space you have.
Start by clearing out everything in your closet. As you take items out, sort them into piles of clothes for this season, clothes for cooler weather that can be stored, and clothes or other items that you haven’t worn in the past 2 years.
Let’s start with the pile of things you haven’t worn or used. Donate those things to a charitable organization, and you can benefit from the tax write-off. For the pile that is not ‘in-season’ store these clothes in plastic containers or jumbo storage bags that you can compress the air out of for maximum space efficiency. Store these items under a bed, in a crawl space, or a hope chest until next season comes.
Now for the things you want to keep in your closet. Shoes can be awkward to store if you don’t have a system. Try keeping them in the boxes they came in or clear stackable containers with drawer fronts you can easily pull out. This way you can stack your shoes and still store things neatly. Have a closet door? Hang a shoe rack on the back for a space saving idea.
Keep clothing that can be kept folded in dresser drawers or specialized vertical storage racks in your closet.
Lastly, know your space. Take measurements of the usuable space in your closet, and write it down. Then when you go to the store to purchase storage items you can easily measure it up to your exact space.
Organizing your closet isn’t hard. All we need is a bit of inspiration, and a lot of motivation. What better motivation do you need than the thought of warm sunny days in your shorts and flip-flops?
So get busy and tackle that closet!
