Hilliard is named after John Reed Hilliard, who bought 10 acres of farmland from Hoseah High and Abraham Wendell in 1852.
The Piqua and Indian Railroad ran alongside the farmland, and it was along this railway that the town, originally called Hilliard's Station, sprang up.
The town was plotted by John Hilliard in 1853, and in 1854 a post office was established. At thtat time, the town became know simply as "Hilliard."
